Quincy- Leroy W. Higgins (Roy) aged 89 passed away January 11, 2013 at Quincy Medical Center. He was attended by his daughter, Susan Higgins of Sanbornton, NH and his son, Roy Higgins of Groton, MA in his final hours.
Leroy’s wife of 53 years, Jean L. Higgins, predeceased him in January, 2008. Leroy is survived by his brother, Roger B. Higgins of Londonderry, NH and Lorraine Higgins, wife of his deceased brother Donald I. Higgins of Concord, MA, sister-in laws, Peg Barlow of ME and Doris Marshall of CA. He is also survived by son David M. Higgins, Lisa Higgins (wife of Roy) and three grandsons; Christopher H. Barrett of Concord, NH and Tim and Matthew Higgins of Groton, MA.
Leroy is a decorated WWII veteran of the Marines 6th division having survived the Battle of Okinawa from April 1st to June 22nd 1945. He was awarded the Purple Heart. Post war, Leroy started and ran for ten years a successful TV business. He was proud to have a thousand regular customers by “word of mouth.” He also worked for and was good friends with William Frangioso and drove commercial trucks with “no restrictions” for many years. As a disabled vet, he lived his life with courage, fortitude, humor and faith. He married, raised children and supported his family, friends, church and anyone who needed help. He is known for a life of generosity. A strong believer in God, Leroy was pleased to have served as a lay preacher at the Adams Shore Community Church under the Evangelical United Brethren. He served many years as financial secretary and a Sunday school teacher. Leroy had a sharp, inquisitive mind and a desire to search out truth. He studied the Bible each morning, taking notes and following up on the footnotes. He completed over one hundred readings. Sister-in-law, Doris Marshall, describes his death as “the passing of an era.”
In memoriam, Roy would be honored if others seek out God and put into practice “No one gets rich by giving the other guy a break; give the other guy a break.” In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the charity of your choice.
