John Bliss MacKay, 77, passed away on August 14, 2011 at Avow Hospice in Naples, FL after a courageous battle with cancer. A long-time resident of South Weymouth, MA, he has resided in Naples since 2007. He was born in Amherst, Nova Scotia, Canada on November 15, 1933 to the late Eliza Trenholm MacKay and James A. MacKay, Sr.
John attended Northeastern University and was a former Assistant Chief Engineer and Consultant for Stone and Webster Engineering in Boston. He was also active in several basketball leagues in the Boston area.
In addition to his devoted friend, Lyn Blass, he is survived by his two children: Peter B. MacKay of Santa Clara, CA and Susan L. MacKay of Weymouth, MA. He is also survived by his two sisters, Marlene M. MacLeod of Alpharetta, GA and Dorothy M. Buchanan of Cambridge, NY. Also survived by 3 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother, James A. MacKay, Jr. and sister, Audrey C. Specht .
Right Worshipful John Bliss MacKay belonged to many Masonic Organizations. He was a Past District Deputy Grand Master of the Quincy 26th Masonic District, a Past Master of the Quincy 22nd Lodge of Instruction, a Past Director of the Services Department for Grand Lodge of Masons in Massachusetts, He was a Representative to the Grand Lodge of Venezuela and the Holder of the Joseph Warren Medal for Distinguished Service to Freemasonry. He was a Past Master of the Weymouth Orphan's Hope Masonic Lodge and also a Past Master of Delta Masonic Lodge in Braintree. He was a member of the Southeastern Past Masters Association and the former Victory Lodge of Watertown, Ma.
John was a Past Worthy Patron of the Wessagussett Order of Eastern Star, a Past High Priest of the Watertown Royal Arch Chapter, and a member of the Triad Royal Arch Chapter in Newton. He also belonged to all York Rite Bodies in East Weymouth namely, Temple Council Royal and Select Masters, Pentalpha Royal Arch Chapter and the South Shore Commandery Knights Templar.
He was a member of Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, Valley of Boston, Aleppo Shrine, AAONMS, and the Naples Florida Shrine Club. He was a Past Puissant Sovereign of the Bay State Conclave, Knights of the Red Cross of Constantine, A member of the Mayflower York Rite College and the Colonial Craftsman’s Club of Lexington, Ma.
For many years John participated in the Apharesis Blood Donation Program and received a citation from the American Red Cross for donating 487 platelets.
The Weymouth United Masonic Lodge will perform a graveside Masonic funeral service at Mount Hope Cemetery in South Weymouth on Thursday September 8th at 6:00 p.m.
