Tilak was born on April 3, 1939 in RawalPindi. Son of Hans Raj Mullick and Maya Devi, he was the third eldest of six children.
Tilak and his family moved to India in 1947 where his father was employed as a railway guard. After living in railway camps throughout India, a motivated Tilak moved to Uttar Pradesh where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree at Shambu Dayal College in Ghaziabad.
In 1967 at the age of 28, Tilak married his beautiful wife Sneh Iata. The couple share three children: Sameer, Manisha, and Vishal. In 1969, Tilak chose to pursue further studies in Canada; however, the separation from his family was unbearable and he quickly returned to India. Once he returned home, Tilak worked at the State Bank of India as a field officer.
In December of 1983, Tilak decided to move his family to Brooklyn, New York in search of greater opportunities and to reunite with his mother who left India in 1974. After years of meticulous work and dedication as a small business owner, Tilak retired at 66.
In retirement, Tilak enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, traveling, playing cards, and being a sous chef for his wife.
Tilak's passing is a great loss to his family and friends, but his memory will live on through the love and respect he inspired in those who knew him. He will forever be remembered.
