Marie Bernadette Julme (nee Louis) was born on July 8th,1957 to Louira and Ines Louis in Arrondissement des Cayes, Haiti Sud-Ouest (Borough of South West Haiti). As a young girl in 1965, Marie met and became friends with Joseph Julme in Petion-Ville, Haiti. She would later grow up to marry and spend the rest of her life with him. Marie decided to move from Haiti with Joseph so that they could have a better life with greater opportunities. After considering options such as Boston, Florida, and Canada, they moved to Brooklyn, New York in August of 1981. In January of 1983, Marie and Joseph welcomed their first son, Jose Bernard Julme. In December of 1992, they welcomed their second son, Mitchell Julme. Marie, Joseph, and their sons spent many years living in Newark, New Jersey, and in Brooklyn, New York. In August of 2019, Marie, Joseph, and Mitchell moved to Queens Village, New York, to be closer to Jose, his wife Tricia, and grandchildren Jayden and Angelique.
Marie was a loving and devoted wife, mother, sister, and grandmother. She was filled with kindness and generosity and was a blessing to all who knew her. Marie was a wonderful cook who put love into every meal that she cooked. Every New Year, family and friends looked forward to having some of Marie’s delicious pumpkin soup (soup joumou). She always made enough to share. In addition to cooking, Marie enjoyed spending time with her family, playing games such as dominos and puzzles, and watching favorite tv shows such as General Hospital, Survivor, and Dancing with the Stars. Marie not only took loving care of her own family in the U.S., but she always made sure to send food and other supplies back to Haiti for those in need. She was a truly kind and loving soul.
Marie Bernadette Julme went to be with the Lord on April 12th, 2021. She is survived by her husband Joseph Julme, sons Jose Julme and Mitchell Julme, brother Calixte Roumain, Jose’s wife Tricia and grandchildren Jayden and Angelique, cousins Maimaille Louis and Jimmy Louis, as well as friends in the U.S., Canada, and back home in Haiti. We thank God for the time that we were blessed to have with Marie.
