Flora Rosemaria Brown, 86, peacefully passed away after a struggle with breast cancer on March 26, at Queens General Hospital, New York City. She was born on October 8th 1931, to parents, Cornelius and Alexandriene Bostic in Guyaguyare, Trinidad West Indies. She was the first born of 6 children: Vernie, Jacqueline, Wholly, and Ruby (deceased), Gloria( deceased), and Ricky (deceased). Flora attended St Gabriel’s Girls Roman Catholic School and then completed high school at St Joseph Convent, San Fernando.
At age 18, Flora met and fell in love with Barry Brown, (predeceased) and they were married on April 13th, 1949, and had a blessed marriage for 53 years. Flora and Barry became proud parents of 10 children: Ava, Annette, Gail, Wendy, Kenlan, Lexter, Yvette, Claire, Roger and Wayne who went to be with the Lord at the tender age of 2.
Flora was the proud and devoted grandmother of Dinelle, Laisa, Tyler, Phillip, Maghan, Jake, Michael, Nicholas, Matthew, Johnny, Denzel and Dirk (deceased). Adding to her joy of being a devoted grandmother were her great-grandchildren: Tsian, Daniel, Luke, and Josiah. At every phase of their lives, she had the privilege to celebrate every achievement be it graduation, First Communion and Confirmation, she treasured them all ...
In 1988, Flora migrated from Trinidad and reunited with her children living in New York City at the time. The separation, though short, was hard on her. Being in her children’s presence once again brought her much joy and contentment.
On October 31st, 2002, Flora lost her beloved husband Barry, when he went to be with the Lord. With the loss of her husband, Flora rededicated her life to God, finding comfort and solace in His service.
Flora loved children and cared for them whether they were of friends or relatives. She was a simple woman and found joy in ordinary things such as gardening and was known for her “green thumb”. Flora will patiently and tenderly nurse a dying plant back to life, in the same way that she will care for a sick child. She enjoyed decorating her home for all seasons, especially at Christmas time. Apart from that, shopping was her favorite pastime and she was delighted to go shopping for her grand – children much to their delight.
Flora was a woman of integrity and high moral standards. These were the core values that she instilled in her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Flora has passed the baton on to them, to run the race of life with integrity and honor.
Each human life is precious
Each human life is valuable
Each human life is sacred
Precious is the joy of being born
Valuable is the privilege of walking the face of the earth
And sacred, yes sacred is the dying when life ends
The spirit, once set free, begins its journey back to its Maker
So, let it be with Flora Rosemaria Brown.
Though she is gone, the beauty and truth of her life
Remain in her sons and daughters,
In her grand, and great-grandchildren
And in their commitment to always honor her memory
Honor her memory - one day at a time.
