Betty L. Matthews, née Mims, entered into an eternal sleep on Monday, March 06, 2023, at The Calvary Hospital in The Bronx, New York. Betty was born January 02, 1941, in Edgefield, South Carolina to the late George Mims Sr., and Willie Mae Campbell Mims. Betty was born the fifth of eight children.
Betty attended the Ward Public School, in Ward, SC and graduated from Ridge Hill High School in Ridge Spring, SC. She loved and was a great player of basketball. She found her relationship with God at a young age and became an active member of Coleman Ridge Baptist Church in Ridge Spring, SC. She met Albert Matthews, Jr. and the two were married on December 24, 1961. This union was blessed with three children: Bernadette a.k.a. Brenda, Alberta, and Alex.
Betty and Albert moved from South Carolina to New York in 1962 and made their home in Jamaica, NY. She worked full-time at the U.S. Postal Service for over 34 years in Whitestone, NY, until her retirement. Betty was a God-fearing woman and a dedicated member of the Faith Baptist Church in Hempstead, NY, where she served on the Missionary Board.
Betty was kind, loving, intelligent, articulate, determined, organized, and had a great work ethic. She loved to laugh, play cards, help others, and garden.
In addition to her parents and grandparents, she was predeceased by Albert Matthews, her five siblings: Ruth Abney, George Mims Jr., Marion Mims, Mary Maggielean "Maggie" (Sammie) Simpkins, and Tropsy Lee (Albert) Baxter.
She was loved and will be missed from this physical earth by the following family and friends: Daughters: Bernadette "Brenda" Lavern (Stanley) Matthews-Wells and Alberta Matthews-Dumas (Reginald, deceased) , and Son, Alex (Rebecca) Matthews;
Grandchildren: Nicholas (Ashley) Matthews, Benjamin Beckett, Stephen Dumas, Caleb Dumas, Alexis Matthews, and Alyssa Matthews; four great-grandchildren; two brothers: E.W. (Inez) Mims , and J.C. Mims, a sister-n-law, Ollie Mae Burgess (Moreese, deceased), brothers-n-law, Larry (Audrey) Matthews and James Allen (Inez Matthews Allen, deceased), her dear friend Annie Laura Butler; and many nephews, nieces, cousins, friends and neighbors.
