Anthony Neblett, affectionately called “Tony” by his family and friends, was born on January 20th, 1935 to the late Conrad and Muriel Neblett in the Parish of St. Andrews in Barbados. Tony was the second of seven children. He was raised by his grandmother, Hetty Brathwaite, and aunt, Eulalie Edwards, in Christ Church. He attended Saint Giles Boys School in the parish of St. Michael and then Combermere School, also in St. Michael. He became a printer and worked for three newspapers in Barbados: The Recorder, The Advocate, and The Daily News. Tony continued to work in the field of printing after moving to the United States.
Tony met Gay Herbert, the love of his life, in 1958 in Barbados at The Catholic Youth Organization. They kept in touch after Gay immigrated to the United States and were engaged when Gay returned to visit Barbados in 1961. Tony immigrated to the US in 1963. Tony and Gay were married on September 7, 1963 and made their home in Brooklyn, NY. From their union they were blessed with three daughters: Dr. Heather Neblett-Alexander (Ronnie) of Columbia, MD, Catherine Neblett Mackel (Sherwood) of Silver Spring, MD, and Andrea Neblett of Newark, CA. His girls affectionately called him “Da”, a shortened form of “Dada”. Tony instilled in them the importance of an education and he worked hard to ensure his children could achieve their goals. His family was the center of his life. He and Gay were a team.
Tony had many skills and hobbies. He could fix almost anything. He enjoyed making beautiful kites and flying them with his children and later on, his grandchildren. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends and was always taking pictures or recording videos. He loved to travel and would drive just about anywhere. He traveled across the U.S. and visited several countries. He was an active member of the Combermere Alumni Association in the United States and an active member of the Caribbean Association and The Family Life Committee at Incarnation Church.
He could be stern, but was known for his acts of kindness and devotion. Tony worked hard for his family and always sought to do what he thought was best for them. He was a lifelong, dependable friend to many. Tony and Gay recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Their marriage is a true example of love, devotion and commitment.
The Lord called Anthony home on October 8th, 2013. He died quietly in his sleep. We find comfort in knowing that while he is absent from the body, Anthony is present with the Lord (2 Corinthians 5). He was predeceased by two brothers, Philip and Orlando, and one sister, Joan. Tony leaves to cherish his memory his beloved wife; three daughters; six grandchildren who loved and adored their Pop-Pop: Maya, Camille, Paige, Christopher, Craig, and Jesse; his sisters-in-law Shirley Saunders and Patricia Herbert; his brothers Aubyn (Magnol), Owen (Carmita), Ferdinand (Hortense); and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends. He will be greatly missed and leaves behind a legacy of love.
