Annie Mae English

Annie Mae English was born February 20, 1916, in Lugoff, South Carolina. She was the daughter of Georgeanna and Eli Davis and the oldest of 5 siblings Eugene, Nancy, Dorothy, Ralph, and James whom all preceded her in death. Annie Mae spent her early years in South Carolina. At the age of 12 she gave her life to the Lord and was baptized at Weeping Mary Baptist Church in Lugoff, South Carolina. She graduated from Jackson High School in Camden, South Carolina.

Annie Mae married David English on January 9, 1938, in Brooklyn, New York. They lived in Harlem, New York for several years before moving their young family to their forever home in Hollis, New York. Annie Mae was a devoted mother of three loving daughters. She is survived by Vivian Woods. Louise Bailey and Doris Lockett, both preceded her in death. She was a loving grandmother to 8 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild.

Annie Mae worked as a housekeeper for several years before attending and graduating from Montefiore School of Nursing. She received her LPN (License Practical Nurse) in January 1959. She attended New York City Community College, Division of Continuing Education, where she received a certificate in Health Needs of Older Adults. She worked at New York Health & Hospital Corp for 16 years before retiring in 1978. She was a champion for education and excellence, and she understood the importance of service and giving back to the community. After retirement she volunteered at a local senior center and St. Albans Nursing Home. She was also a member of Chapter #10 Order of the Eastern Star where she held the position of Matron.

Annie Mae had a sweet and gentle spirit, soft tone, and a loving and joyful heart. She was a devout Christian and a longtime member of Calvary Baptist Church in Jamaica, New York. She loved the Lord and was a prayer warrior. She enjoyed spending time with her family and was a fabulous cook and baker. She was an advocate of healthy living and walking daily. She enjoyed sweets and was notorious for her sweet potato, lemon meringue pies, cakes, and cookies. Her macaroni and cheese was epic and was a staple at every family gathering. She loved to knit and crochet. She made beautiful blankets, sweaters, curtains, scarfs, hats, and baby clothes that she shared with family. Annie Mae loved baseball and wrestling. She attended many ball games and wrestling matches with her beloved husband.

Annie Mae is survived by her daughter Vivian Woods and son-in-law Leon Woods Sr.; Grandchildren Tracie Bailey, Robin James (Darrell James, husband), William “Bill” Bailey Jr., (Nassima “Nas” Bailey, wife), Amanda “Mindy” Lockett, Leon “Len” Woods Jr., Monique “Mo” Lockett, Kimberlee “Kim” Woods, Sean “Dave” Lockett (Jaclyn “Jackie” Lockett, wife); Sister-in-law Earnestine "Earnie" Davis, and a host of great grandchildren, relatives, and friends.

A visitation for Annie will be held Friday, February 17, 2023 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at R. Stutzmann & Son, 224 39 Jamaica Ave, Queens Village, NY 11428. A funeral service will occur Friday, February 17, 2023 from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM, 224 39 Jamaica Ave, Queens Village, NY 11428. A committal service will occur Friday, February 17, 2023 from 2:00 PM to 2:45 PM at Pinelawn Memorial Park, 2030 Wellwood Avenue, Farmingdale, NY 11735.
