Edwin Miller, 88, of Punta Gorda, FL passed away January 10, 2020 at the Harbor Health Center of South Port Square. He was born August 28, 1931 in Brooklyn, New York to Abraham and Fannie (nee Tucker) Miller.
In his younger days, Ed loved to build model airplanes. He would go to the local butcher and ask for some wrapping paper so he could draw up the plans, then spend hours cutting the Balsa wood and building a plane from scratch.
He enlisted in the US Navy in 1951 and served until 1955 while our country was at war with Korea. With his love for building model airplanes as a child, he thought he could carry that talent over to the Navy fixing airplane engines. But after being schooled in aviation electronics, he volunteered for Air Crew and was trained to operate the radios and the radar aboard the aircraft. During his four years, he rose to the rank of Second Class.
He had a love for music, playing the Saxophone and Clarinet frequently. He even taught himself the acoustic guitar and used to play some of the most beautiful music his family ever heard. During his younger days, he played in several bands, including the Redskins Marching Band.
He was an inventor, he loved to find ways to improve on certain products. He held the original patents on the first electronic locks. Many of the locks used today in cars homes and even hotels, came from his designs. Several other inventions never made to the patent stage.
He is survived by his children, Brian L Miller, Francine P Miller and his sister, Edith C Knecht. He was predeceased by his sister Blossom R Spector on September 18, 1995 and his wife, Jeanette N Miller on October 10, 2013.
The family will receive friends from 1:00pm till 3:00pm, Wednesday, January 15, 2020 at the Kays-Ponger & Uselton Funeral Home, 635 E Marion Ave, Punta Gorda, FL 33950.
