Arthur J. Haug

Arthur J. "Ben" Haug, 103, of Punta Gorda, FL and Rome, ME, passed away at his home with family on Monday, October 24th, 2022. It was a comfort to his family that he passed on his and his wife, Winifred Ann’s 69th wedding anniversary.
Ben was born September 27, 1919 in Milwaukee, WI, the first son of the late Arthur George and Unieta (Wittig) Haug. The family moved to their new home in Wawatosa where he attended and graduated from the local schools. While in high school, Haug starred in track and football. He was named to the All Suburban and All-Star Football teams and won the W Club Award for best student/athlete. He was the President of his 1937 Senior Class.
While in High School he became interested in sailing and with his brother Robert "Pete" sailed competitively with the Nagawicka Lake and the Cedar Lake Yacht Clubs. His interest in this sport lasted for 60 years and spanned the lakes of WI and later in Charlotte Harbor in SW Florida.
Haug graduated Marquette University in Milwaukee in 1941 with a BS, cum laude, in Chemistry.
While at MU he won numerals in Freshman football, and a letter in track, was a member of the Phi Chi Psi social fraternity and Sigma Gamma Chi, honorary chemistry fraternity. Then he enrolled at the Institute of Paper Chemistry in Appleton, WI, a specialized graduate school. Haug became a member of TAPPI (Tech. Assn. of the Paper Industry) and remained a member for over 50 years. At the end of the second year he received a Master's degree and the school was shut down due to WWII. For the balance of WWII, Haug worked in Oak Ridge, TN at the Atomic City, helping to provide the material that was used in the bombs that stopped the war with Japan. While in Oak Ridge, he also taught in Oak Ridge High school and ran the summer Playground program. He returned to the IPC and finished schooling in 1947 with a PhD and won the Westbrook Steele Award for Thesis excellence.
Ben left WI in August 1947 and started work at the Scott Paper Company plant in Chester, PA. He advanced from Process Engineer, to Technical Director to Paper Mill Superintendent to Assistant to the Manager. He became a member of PIMA (Paper Industry. Management Assn) throughout his working career.
Without a place to sail in PA, Ben took up riding and had two horses and was a member of the Tully Secane Golf Club. In 1953, he moved to Everett, WA as Paper Mill Manager. He was married to Winifred Ann Scott on October 24th, 1953, and they had five children; Mary Ann, Arthur John II, Diane, Paul and Maureen. While in Washington they were members of the Everett Golf and Country Club and enjoyed riding his horse Midnight.
In 1960 the Haug Family, now 7, moved to New Town Square, PA and Ben became the Staff Technical Control Manager. He also was the manager of the Hoboken, NJ plant that made Cut Rite Wax paper. Vacations and free time was spent at the New Jersey shore. In 1965, The family moved to Queensbury, a suburb of Glens Falls, NY where Ben became the Manager of the Fort Edward Plant in NY. While there he was a member of the Ft. Edward Rotary Club and became its President.
He also received the National PIMA award for excellence in Company/Community Communications. While in NY, the family enjoyed water sports and sailing on nearby Lake George.
In 1967 the family moved to Waterville, ME and Ben became the Division Vice President and Manager of the Scott Winslow Pulp and Paper Plant and its Woodlands.
A new Kraft Pulp mill was built close by, a significant addition to the operation. Ben was a member of the Waterville Rotary Club, a Director of Depositor's Corp (later became Key Corp), David Gould Printing Co, and the Forster Mfg. Co., and he was a member of the Waterville Country Club. Summers were spent at the Camp on Great Pond, one of the Belgrade Lakes chain, sailing, water skiing, fishing, all water sports. The camp became the residence for many years.
In 1978, Ben retired after 31 years with Scott Paper Co. and soon after he became the President and CEO of the Forster Mfg. Co., Inc. in Wilton, ME. The company manufactured hardwood products and plastic cutlery. In 1986 he retired and moved to Punta Gorda, FL. Where he and Winnie became avid cruisers of the FL waters in their Ben-Win Ill for 12 years. They then cruised in a motor home for 10 years, including trips to their children’s homes and spending summers at camp in Rome Maine. Ben's hobbies were boating, biking, model airplane flying, and the pursuit of the family roots, genealogy Club and an Investment Club.
Ben is predeceased by his loving wife, Winifred, his son, Paul Haug, and brother Robert Haug and wife Roseanne. He is survived by his 4 children: Mary Ann Larson (Steve) of Chalfont, PA, Arthur John Haug II (Eunice) of Branford, CT, Diane Letson of Steamboat Springs, CO, Maureen Denis of Winslow, ME.
Ben was blessed with 13 Grandchildren: Stephanie Larson of Erie, PA, Gregory Larson of Norristown, PA, Marie Mahler-Haug of Washington, DC, Alexandra Mahler-Haug of New York City, NY, Olivia Mahler-Haug of Seattle, WA, Gabriel Mahler-Haug of Branford, CT, Lauren Deliefde of North Potomac, MD and Charlotte Letson of Park City, UT, Ashley Rancourt and Nicole Tracey of Winslow, ME, Günter, Grace, and Natalie Haug-Pavlak of Falmouth, ME.
Also, Ben has 3 great grandchildren: Chase and Sydney Rancourt of Winslow, ME and Winifred Deliefde of North Potomac, MD and many nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Mass will be held at Notre Dame Catholic Church and Internment will be in the Pine Grove Cemetery in Belgrade Lakes at later dates.
The family would like to immensely thank our dad’s loving and devoted caregiver, Jessica Walker, for truly going above and beyond caring for our dad for his last years! We are forever grateful!!
