Shirley was born in Lauderdale Co., AL on August 24, 1947 to Louis and Perlie Howard Kates. She was a former employee of Ganton and a member of the Minor Hill First Baptist Church. Shirley found enjoyment collecting things such as Barbies, home interior décor, spending time with her family; however, she loved having and showing off photos of precious memories and people. She is preceded in death by her parents; sister Barbara Ann Graves; brother Thomas Leroy Kates.
Visitation will be 10-2pm on Saturday February 8, 2025 at Carr and Erwin Funeral Home with the Funeral Services following at 2pm. Interment will follow in Hester’s Chapel Cemetery.
Shirley is survived by her husband Joe Thornton of Minor Hill; son Joey Thornton (Lisa Cherry) of Pulaski; daughter Glenda Weaver (Keith) of Pulaski; sisters Bonnie Swanner of Goodspring, Kathy Long (M.F) of Lester, AL., Judy Mayo (Robert) of Pulaski; grandchildren Candy Burtram (Justin), and Tanner Mayo (Chelsie); great grandchildren Riley Jane, Aiden, Hardin, and Lincoln Wiley; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, friends, and other relatives.
