Born in Bowie, TX, she was the daughter of Emma Electra and Richard McMakin. She received a BA in Education from Denver University (DU) and an MA in Psychology, Guidance and Counseling from the University of Northern Colorado .
Lona was a teacher and a counselor for Jefferson County Schools for 25 years, many of which were spent teaching 3rd grade at Lasley Elementary School. She made many positive contributions in the area of special education in the Colorado Public School System.
Lona was a Christian who loved traveling around the United States fishing and sightseeing with Charles and their children in their RV. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother who would do everything she could to help someone with the support of her loving husband Charles. Their house had an open door to those in need whether they were family or friends. Their children, grandchildren, and their friends lived in their basement on many occasions for a year or whatever it took to get on their feet.
She is predeceased by her husband Charles; children Barbara Smoot and Brian Stanley; and Grandson Jesse Kuykendall.
Lona is survived by her children, Bob Stanley and Sharon Stanley and 6 Grandchildren: Barbara’s son Roger Adrian, Sharon’s son Clint, Bob’s children Tara, Michael, Kaitlin and Erin; eight great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild.
A service will be held in the Mt Lindo Cemetery Chapel, 5928 S. Turkey Creek Rd, Morrison, CO on Fri, 4/14 at noon.
The family respectfully requests cards in lieu of flowers as they no longer live in town.
