Larry Thomas Todd of Pueblo West, Colorado, passed away on May 28, 2021 surrounded by his loving family in the ICU at Parkview Medical Center. Larry was born on December 19, 1948 to Howard and Mary (Punky) Todd in Canon City, Colorado. Larry was a train fanatic from the start, peering out of his crib at the trains that passed by his childhood home.
Larry graduated from Canon City High School in 1967. He joined the National Guard in 1970. He was a sharp shooter and achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant before being honorably discharged in 1982.
Larry began working at the Colorado Department of Corrections in 1973. During his 30+ years with DOC, Larry served in many roles. He worked his way up through the ranks to Captain and he impacted many young officers’ lives during his time as an instructor at the Academy. He was also a firearms instructor for a number of years.
Larry spent a few years as a realtor in Pueblo. He enjoyed learning something new and interacting with his clients.
In April of 1990, Larry married the love of his life, Terry Ann Harmes. They were married for 31 years. Their blended family included four daughters. Larry didn’t mind being the only man in a house full of girls. He loved taking care of each of them. Larry enjoyed spending time with his family, particularly his grandchildren who liked to visit Grandpa’s house to play with the trains. Larry was an animal lover and often had a furry friend sitting in the chair with him. He loved animals and they loved him back.
Larry’s passion was model railroading and photography. He spent many hours “chasing trains” in order to get just the right shot. His images have been published in calendars and magazines over the years. He enjoyed taking his daughters with him on his adventures when they were young. The girls have fond memories of spending time with him on Tennessee Pass.
In his spare time, Larry enjoyed building model trains and layouts. His vast knowledge of all things trains will be missed by many in the rail communities of which he was a member. Larry enjoyed attending slide shows and operating sessions with his friends. He was always available to answer a question or help with a layout. His train collection was his pride and joy. His family often teased him that he had enough inventory to open a hobby store.
Larry is survived by his wife, Terry Todd. His daughters: Jennifer (Jeff) Taege of Rhinelander, WI, Kirsten (Tim) Harbeck of Littleton, CO, Diana (Tyson) Fye of Stratton, CO, and Megan Gillis-Todd of Aurora, CO.
