CSM Joseph A. Porter, USA (Ret), “Sarge” was born in Milan, Missouri on April 15, 1919 and died September 23, 2012. Joe joined the United States Army in 1941 and fought in WWII and Korea. He earned many honors, among them, two Purple Hearts. He taught ROTC at Central High from 1951-55 and 1968-69. After his retirement from the service, he worked at Egan Texaco for 17 years and Vidmar Motors for three years. Mr. Porter is preceded in death by his brothers, Sandy and Eugene; sister, Ruth Porter; and brother in law, Charles Thomas. Joe is survived by his wife, Florine; nephew, Eugene “Pete” Porter of Franklin Park, Illinois and other relatives in and around Milan and Sullivan Counties Missouri; sister in law, Enid Thomas and nephew, Brian (Melody) Thomas of Pueblo. Joe belonged to many civic organizations including; the Retired Enlisted Association Chapter 20; Al Kaly Shrine; American Legion Post #2; Veterans of Foreign Wars; Masonic Home of Missouri; Seaman #126 Milan, Missouri AF & AM; Military Order of the Purple Heart; and the Disabled American Veterans. He was a life member of the Scottish Rite of Freemasons, S.J., USA. Special thanks to Ted Mutz, neighbor, friend and caregiver and the staff at Life Care Center, especially Station 3. Visitation, noon -1 pm, Friday, September 28, followed by Funeral Service at 1 pm, both at George McCarthy Historic Chapel, 400 Broadway, Pueblo, CO, with Reverend Earleen Cornell officiating.
