Joseph Samuel Fodor, 96 beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather passed away the afternoon of January 28. “Papa Joe” was surrounded by family during the time of his peaceful passing.
Joe was born in Rocky Mountain, Colorado to William and Frances Fodor. He was one of the fourteen children. Joe’s family owned a small farm near Trujillo Creek. He worked the farm with his mother and siblings while his dad worked in the coal mines. When his older brothers were drafted, Joe returned to the farm to support his parents and the sibling still at home. Joe’s first priority was taking care of his family, which he did with quiet dedication throughout his life.
He worked for a time on the railroad and often said that was his favorite job. It was physically demanding, but he got to ride the trains he loved, fish and hunt during down time, and explore all over Colorado.
Joe was drafted into the army during the Korean War, during which time he received a bronze star and commendation ribbon with pendant for meritorious achievement. After his service, he returned to the CF&I Steel Mill where he worked for 37 years. Soon after his return, he also met the love of his life, MaryAnn, who would become his wife.
Joe and MaryAnn were married for 52 years before her passing in 2007. Joe is also preceded in death by his parents and all of his siblings. He is survived by sister-in-law Helen Jean Phillips, his five children- JoAnn (Trigg) Marquiss, Jim (Kathy) Fodor, Judith (Charles) Fodor, Janet (Bob) Moore, and Jeff (Carrie) Fodor- twenty-one grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Trips to Cripple Creek, playing cards with family, John Wayne movies, family dinners and telling stories were some of Joe’s favorite ways to spend time. He always showed up to games, school performances, church events, and never forgot to send a birthday card. Through all life’s hardships Joe’s “don’t give up” attitude, sense of humor, and dependability earned him the affection, respect, and friendship of everyone he met.
Papa Joe will be missed, but his family takes comfort in knowing he is reunited with his Little Flower, MaryAnn and laid to rest alongside her. A vigil will be held at 6pm on Tuesday, February 7th at Holy Family Catholic Church. A requiem mass at Holy Family Catholic Church will be held Wednesday, February 8th at 1pm. Interment will follow at Imperial Memorial Gardens
In lieu of flowers the family asks that you make a contribution to The Wounded Warrior Project. Donations can be made at support.woundedwarriorproject.org
