GEORGE L. STEIN passed away Tuesday, April 19, 2011 after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. George was born September 20, 1941 in Blue Island, Illinois. He is preceded in death by his parents, George and Ellen Stein; sister, Joann Atansio; and son, Dale Stein. He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Janice Stein, Pueblo, Colorado; daughter, Michellee McNamara, Pueblo, Colorado; son, Michael Stein, Pueblo, Colorado; granddaughters, Ashley McNamara, Pueblo, Colorado, Courtney McNamara, Pueblo, Colorado and Rebecca Zoller, San Angelo, Texas. He is also survived by siblings, Martin (Pat) Stein, Chatsworth, Illinois; Louis (Joann) Stein, Blue Island, Illinois; William Stein, Emington, Illinois; and Linda Oliva, Oak Lawn, Illinois; brother-in-law, Dominick Atansio, Harwood Heights, Illinois; step mother-in-law, Dorothy Dillon.
George served in the U.S. Army and retired from Pueblo School District 60 after twenty plus years. After retirement, he spent many years caring for his granddaughters, Ashley and Courtney. He loved painting ceramics for which he won several ribbons at the Colorado State Fair, as well as caring for his many plants. He also collected coins, steins, hot wheels and John Deere items. George also enjoyed watching Nascar racing and his favorite drivers were Bill Elliott and Kasey Kane. He also participated in stock car racing with Mark Mauro and truly enjoyed those times of racing. He loved spending time with his dogs, Princess and Buttons.
George will be remembered for his favorite snacks which included red licorice, Hostess cupcakes and Cracker Jacks. He enjoyed eating meals at the Pantry restaurant as well as having a pizza from Ianne’s Pizza and Papa Murphy’s. He also loved having meatball sandwiches from Collette’s. He will also be remembered for his goofy smile and his sayings, such as “We’re here because we’re here.”
George was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather.

The family will receive relatives and friends on Monday, April 25, 2011, 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Imperial Funeral Home. Graveside service inurnment, Tuesday, April 26, 2011 at 2 p.m. Imperial Memorial Gardens, with military honors presented by Pueblo Veterans Ritual Team. The family would like to thank Sangre de Cristo Hospice for their loving care for George. In lieu of food and flowers, donations may be made to an account set up at Sunwest Educational Credit Union.
