Sidney W Rosen, 95, distinguished physician of many accomplishments, passed away Monday August 5 surrounded by loving family in his longtime home in Fall River MA. Born in Lynn MA to Lewis and Augusta (Gordon) Rosen, Sidney is survived by devoted and adored wife of 66 yrs Lorraine Adler Rosen, loving daughter Melanie, son-in-law Mitchell Brooks, treasured granddaughter Gillian, loving nephew Sandor, brothers Leslie, Richard and pre-deceased by sisters Lois Grossman and Winnifred Moller. A graduate of University of Mass Amherst and Middlesex University Medical School 1943, a gastroenterology fellowship at Lahey Clinic, elected MA Governor of American College of Gastroenterology 1982-86. Sid served his community faithfully as an internist and gastroenterologist, dedicating his marvelous diagnostic skills and studied thoughtful care to his practice. Cigarettes were banned from his office in 1962. He published numerous articles in JAMA, served Charlton Memorial Hospital as Chief of Staff and Medical Director 1985-88 and Utilization Director 1966-88, a member of MA Board of Utilization Review for Blue Cross/Blue Shield and American Medical Assoc. Committee for Diagnostic and Therapeutic Technology. A US Navy Medical Corps veteran of WWII and Korean Wars, he served on submarine tender Howard Gilmore, then at the American Naval Hospital in Panama, and as Commander at Chelsea Naval Hospital. At 78, he attended Roger Williams Univ Law School and received an MPH from Harvard School of Public Health in 1999. He completed practicums with MA State Senator Moore and interned with Chief Bruce Selya of the First Circuit Court of Appeals. He subsequently opened Health Benefit Reviews, a patient advocacy service. Recently, he was passionately devoted to researching and blogging about the carcinogenic bacterium, Helicobacter Pylori and its role in causing certain cancers and in the development of Alzheimer’s Disease, which he fervently hopes will lead to prevention and AD’s ultimate eradication worldwide. A natural and wonderful athlete, Sid ran cross country in college and was an ROTC Calvalry member. An early skier and avid sailor and racer, Sid won many regattas at The New Bedford Yacht Club in Rhodes19 and J24 class, competed and won 2nd place in the R19 Class 1979 Nationals in San Francisco. He enjoyed golf, decades after observing as a caddie at age13. With great passion for the American Revolution, he became an accomplished expert in the Wars’ battles and significant players on both sides. Sid was devoted to his friends, family and to humanity; his sensitive and gentle kindness, engaging and mild manner, keen intelligence and his unfailingly magnificent medical advice will be eternally missed by his appreciative friends and loving family.
