Providence Robert J.Swain, 69, of Bradley Street, died unexpectedly Thursday, January 31, 2013, at home. He was the husband of the late Carolyn A. (Kirker) Swain. Born in Providence, a son of the late Chester and Helen (Zwinklis) Swain, he was a lifelong Providence resident. Bob served his country proudly in the United States Coast Guard during the Vietnam War, and upon being discharged, served as a patrolman with the Providence Police Department for thirty-two years, retiring in 2002. During his career, he received numerous awards and citations for outstanding police work. He was a member of the Providence Fraternal Order of Police, Lodge # 3, and the Retired Providence Police and Firefighters Association. An avid outdoorsman, Bob enjoyed hunting and both freshwater and saltwater fishing. He leaves two daughters, Pamela M. Carter and her husband Thomas, and Laurie A. Zoglio and her husband Richard; a brother, Richard Swain; and three loving grandchildren, Richard Zoglio, III, Victoria Carter, and Stephanie Carter. He was a brother of the late Chester Swain. The funeral will be held Tuesday, at 8:45 am, from the Russell J. Boyle & Son Funeral Home, 331 Smith Street, Providence. Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am in Saint Pius V Church, Eaton Street, Providence. Burial, with military honors, will be in Highland Memorial Park, Johnston. Visiting hours, Monday, 4 - 7 pm.
