Cranston Raymond E. Grimes, 91, formerly of Lyndon Road, passed away peacefully Thursday morning, March 17, 2016, Saint Patrick’s Day, at Saint Elizabeth Home in East Greenwich. Born in Providence, he was a son of the late Peter J. and Helen (Sheehan) Grimes. Mr. Grimes proudly served his country with the United States Marine Corps, during WWII participating in the invasion of Peleliu and Okinawa, Japan with the 1st Marine Division. During the invasion of Peleliu, he served as a runner for Lieutenant Colonel Lewis Burwell “Chesty” Puller. His devotion to his country and his patriotic spirit led him to a life of public service. While a Rhode Island State Senator, Ray introduced legislation that created the Rhode Island Lottery. He later became the Deputy Director of the Rhode Island Lottery where he served in that position for 32 years. He leaves three nephews, Brian J., John F. and Bruce J. Glancy; a niece, Robin M. Glancy; two great nieces, Cristina and Samantha; and a great nephew, Matthew J. Glancy. He was predeceased by his sisters Ruth Grimes, Helen M. (Grimes) Glancy and his niece, Rosemary H. Glancy. The funeral will be held Tuesday, at 8:30 am, from the Russell J. Boyle & Son Funeral Home, 142 Centerville Road, (Rt117) Warwick. Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am in the Assumption Church, 791 Potters Avenue, Providence. Graveside burial, with military honors, will be in Saint Ann Cemetery, Cranston.
