Providence -Scanlan, Mary V. (Crickett), 84, of Elmcrest Avenue died Saturday, August 13 at home surrounded by her loving family. She was the wife of the late James J. Scanlan, M.D. Born in Westford, Massachusetts; she was the daughter of the late Joseph M. Crickett and Winifred (Mulligan) Crickett. Mary grew up in Forge Village, Massachusetts and was a graduate of Keith Hall in Lowell and Wellesley School of Technology in Boston. She worked as a medical technologist at the St. Joseph's Hospitals in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania and Providence, Rhode Island. She is survived by her five children, Maryalice Milne Mullen and her husband Jerry of South Kingstown, Colleen I. Scanlan, founder of the House of Compassion, of Cumberland, Thomas Scanlan and his wife Christine of Jupiter, Florida, Erin Nocera and her husband Christopher, of Providence, and Terrence Scanlan and his wife Patricia of Salem, New Hampshire. She was the sister of Joseph Crickett and his wife Carol of Nebraska, John Crickett and his wife Josie of New Hampshire, Terrence Crickett and his wife Mary of New Hampshire and the late Alice Kelley. She had sixteen grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Mary was known for her wonderful spirit and generosity. She was affiliated with the Pre Cana Program of the Diocese of Providence, the Blue Army, the RI Right to Life Committee St. Jude's Hospital and the House of Compassion. She supported many religious communities including the Dominican Friars of St. Joseph Province, the Brothers of the Christian Schools, the Ursline Sisters of Linwood, the Nashville Dominicans, and the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary, especially their missions in Belize. Mary was a benefactor of La Salle Academy, including serving as the first chair of the Women's Tea, and donated the first run of her husband's book "The History of La Salle" to the school. Recently she was made a member of La Salle's Signum Fidei Society. When her children were in school, she was an active member of the Parent Organizations of St. Augustine's School and St. Mary's Academy Bay View. Nana was most known by the meals she served in her home for her family and friends. She fed everyone's body and soul. A wake will be held on Tuesday, 4 - 8 PM at the Brother's Chapel at La Salle Academy, 612 Academy Avenue, Providence. A concelebrated Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday at 10 AM in St. Pius V Church, Eaton Street, Providence. Burial at the Christian Brothers Cemetery, Christian Brothers Center, 635 Ocean Road, Narragansett.
