Mary Jane (Gallagher) Sweet, 80, passed away May 4, 2015. She was the beloved wife of Edward F. Sweet for 55 years. Born in Washington, D.C., she was a daughter of the late William A. and Margaret (Ozburn) Gallagher. She was the mother of Fr. Daniel J. Sweet, Matthew W. Sweet, John E. Ladouceur and his wife Lori, Elizabeth A. Gizzarelli and her husband Ronald, and Margaret M. Cousineau and her husband Mark; grandmother of 16; sister of Wade J. Gallagher and the late William W. Gallagher and Sr. Rose Gallagher, SNJM.
Although Mary Jane had many interests, ranging from sheep breeding to working as a chemist, most of her accomplishments were an expression of her strong Catholic faith. She was a daily communicant. She supported priests in the missions and at home. Working for justice on the Catholic Inter-racial Council, teaching Religion at St. Edward’s, and defending the faith as a lay Dominican, she was a great friend to the Catholic Church. She was also very proud that all of her five children continued to attend Mass every Sunday. From heaven she will surely give us her prayerful support.
Visitation will be held Friday 4-7 p.m. with her funeral on Saturday at 9 a.m. from the PONTARELLI-MARINO Home, 971 Branch Avenue, Providence. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. in St. Edward Church, 997 Branch Avenue, Providence. Burial will follow in St. Francis Cemetery, Pawtucket. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Edward Church, 997 Branch Avenue, Providence, RI 02904.
