John was born in North Providence on January 26, 1924, the son of the late Archangelo Martino and the late Rose (Naccarato) Martino. He was predeceased by his brothers Ralph Martino and Larry Martino and his sister Hilda Carnevale. He was a lifelong resident of North Providence before moving to Johnston in 2016.
He served his country in combat in World War II in the 29th Infantry Division of the United States Army on the front lines as a communications line runner, receiving many awards and commendations, one of which was the Bronze Star.
John was employed by Ciba-Geigy for many years, until his retirement in 1985.
He is the loving father of Rosemary Montagano (Ernest) of North Scituate, and Barbara Anatone (Richard) of Lincoln. He leaves 5 grandchildren, John Montagano(Erin), Jeff Montagano, Michelle Favaloro (Frank), Christine Anatone (Zack) and Richard Anatone (Kirsten), and two great grandchildren, Brody Montagano and Lily Favaloro.
John loved being with his children, ballroom dancing with his beloved wife, Agnes, playing golf and gardening, providing family and neighbors with a constant supply of tomatoes. He absolutely loved spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. John enjoyed going out for steamers with his siblings and their children whenever they came into town. He was a favorite of all the kids, making them laugh and playing with them. He sang to everyone he knew, especially the staff at Anchor Bay at Pocasset in Johnston, his second family, where he resided since 2016.
John gave of himself and his time without reserve to his family whether it was babysitting grandkids, going to sports games and dance recitals, as well as putting his carpenter skills to use building many projects for his children, which included finishing basements, building decks and boat docks, to name a few. He skillfully created heirloom doll houses for his daughters, something they have cherished over the years, to be passed down to generations. John is a greatly loved man and we can truly say that we are better people having had him in our lives.
We would like to take this time to thank everyone for their outpouring of love and comfort to us at this most difficult time.
And we would like to thank all the staff at Anchor Bay for all the love and care they gave to him these past years. He loved you all.
