

Born in Providence, he was a son of the late James E. Maher Sr. and Helen (McFadden) Maher.
He was the loving brother of Christine Shelhart (the late Jack) of Bristol, Colleen Maher Hourahan (Walter) of Narragansett, Kathleen Maher McKendall (George) of Providence, and Thomas Maher of Waltham, MA and the cherished uncle of several nieces and nephews.
For over 30 years he was the devoted friend of Bill W.
He was a graduate of LaSalle Academy, class of 1958, where he played hockey and baseball.
Jim served in the Army National Guard from 1959 to 1965.
He was employed as a landscaper and postal clerk. He also worked for several years at the Railway Express.
He was a third-generation firefighter for the Providence Fire Department following in the footsteps in his father and grandfather. He was member of Local 799. Upon retirement, he became a member of the Retired Firefighters and Police Association.
He had been a member of the Knights of Columbus Delaney Council # 57 and a member of the Rhode Island Reds Heritage Society. He was also a former Arena Rink Rat, 1947—1953.
Jimmy believed in laughter and he had a contagious sense of humor. He was always quick to tell a story and enjoy a joke.
His visitation will be held Thursday, April 3, 2025 from 4:00-7:00 p.m. and funeral Friday, April 4, 2025 at 8:30 a.m. from the Russell J. Boyle & Son Funeral Home, 331 Smith St, Providence followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. in St. Raymond Church, 1240 North Main St, Providence. Burial will follow in Swan Point Cemetery, Providence.
