Born in Providence RI on April 7, 1925, Mr. Iadevaia was a lifelong resident of Providence and a communicant of St. Ann’s Church, Providence. He was drafted into the U.S. Army infantry in July 1943 and served in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He was a Staff Sergeant when he was discharged in 1946.
He boxed for the Featherweight Championship at Fort Eustis, VA in 1943 and won the Greater Providence Bowling Tournament in 1950. He was a member of the Wanskuck Boys and Girls Club, joining 85 years ago and was inducted into their Hall of Fame in 1986. He was a member of the St. Anthony Knights of Columbus for over 65 years and was inducted into their Hall of Fame in 1987. He was also a member of the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 21.
Mr. Iadevaia was the owner of Guido’s Electric Company before becoming a member of the Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Union, Local 99.
He leaves behind his five children, Dr. David G. Iadevaia, Ph.D. of Arizona, Richard Iadevaia and his wife Kathleen, Valerie Rezendes and her husband Gary, Patricia M. Iadevaia (PPD, Ret.) and Dr. Santa T. Iadevaia Ed.D., all of Rhode Island; and former daughter-in-law Mary-Margaret Iadevaia of Arizona.
And those who called him “PAPA” were his cherished 9 grandchildren, Peter, Andrea, Laura and Elise, Michael and Lisa, and Brian, Stephanie and Nicholas, and 9 great-grandchildren, Juliet and Vincent, Madison and Lance, Lucas and Dominic, Aoife, Ava and Addison. He also leaves behind his brother Elmo Iadevaia of North Carolina and many nieces and nephews. He was pre-deceased by his sisters, Hilda Ruggiero, Dora Buonfiglio and Lydia Iadevaia, and his brothers, Francis, Robert and Raymond Iadevaia.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, 4-7 p.m. with his funeral on Thursday at 8 a.m. from the PONTARELLI-MARINO Home, 971 Branch Avenue, Providence. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9 a.m. in The Church of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, 1081 Mineral Spring Avenue, North Providence, followed by burial with Military Honors in the Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Exeter. In lieu of flowers, donations to honor his name may be made of your choice to Wounded Warriors Project, P.O.
