

Smith ( Mascia ), Emily Anne, age 90, of 98 Homewood Ave, passed away on December 21, 2012 at South Kingstown Nursing and Rehabilitation, South Kingstown, RI. She was the beloved wife of the late Charles W. Smith, Jr. Born in Providence, RI, she was the daughter of Louis and Madeline Ann (Melillo) Mascia. As a graduate/valedictorian of Mt. Pleasant High School, Providence, RI and, later an attendee of Rhode Island College, she went on to work as an employment interviewer at the RI State of Employment Service and interviewer-account clerk- U.S. Bureau of Old Age and Survivors Insurance. Mrs. Smith owned Smith's Jewelry Boutique for 35 years and was vice-president of Charles Smith Dental Laboratory, Inc. In addition, she nurtured and raised her children while being an active member of her community and holding many offices. She is a member of the Rhode Island College Foundation, 1854 Society; past president of James L. McGuire PTA; N.Prov.: Antiquities Society; Commissioner/secretary Housing Authority; 1976 Bicentennial Committee; RI Congress of the 39; Chairperson Festivities Committee ri350; Chairperson Notte Park Amphitheater Building Committee; Democratic Town Committee; Commissioner on the Bicentennial of the U.S. Constitution; Member and Officer Fruit Hill Junior Women's Club and the Heritage Women's Club; Member of St. Augustine's Rosary and Altar Sodality. She was a devoted wife, mother, sister, aunt and grandmother. Never asking anything for herself; she cherished her family and friends. She lived a full life and made a special home for whomever entered its doors. Emily is survived by her daughters Madelyn Smith LaPlume of North Providence and Deborah Klus, with her husband, Frank Klus of Exeter, R.I. She leaves her grandson Joseph William LaPlume, Esq of Brookline, Ma with his wife Chiara LaPlume, Esq. and a great-granddaughter Corinna LaPlume. In addition, she leaves a niece Michelle Mascia and a nephew Louis Mascia. She was the grandmother of the late Michael James LaPlume and sister of the late Louis A. Mascia, Esq. She will be truly missed. Her funeral will be held on FRIDAY at 8:45 am from The RUSSELL J. BOYLE & SON Funeral Home 331 Smith St., PROVIDENCE, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 am in St. Augustine Church 639 Mt. Pleasant Ave, Providence. Interment will follow in St. Ann Cemetery.
