I am sorry to learn of the loss of Dr. Plaw, years after his passing.   I only knew of his work at the Center for Targeted Killing at Umassd.edu from conversations we had and I was deeply impressed by his weighty contribution to this field of study.    As a Teacher of Moral Philosophy, I shared his concern for  Military Ethics,  and I know how much his presence will be greatly missed by all who labor in this field.   To Avery's family:  How I wish I had been there to sit Shiva with you!    Losing my Janet to a rare disease in 2022 has taught me much about how we all take our life's time  for granted.  The  real way, then, for us to respond is to never never  take Each Other  "for granted."    I have moved to Silver Spring, MD, where I am hoping to finish a book started in Providence on War, G_d, a nd Evil.

I was greatly saddened to learn Avery had passed away.  I had the  pleasure of meeting Avery when we were both undergraduates at Trinity College, University of Toronto.  His erudition, wry dry sense of humor, and mild eccentricity made every interaction at a minimum amusing, and often hilarious.  He could be absent minded, acerbic, and acutely on point - often all at the same time.  In later years, we caught up again, on a sailboat in Jamestown, Rhode Island.   He was the same Avery, with an insight sharpened by further years and experiences.  A few years after that, he was kind enough to make the cross country trek to my wedding in San Francisco.   We talk about our families, and vowed to catch up again.

Our thoughts are with his family in this difficult time. 

I knew Professor Plaw as a student at UMass Dartmouth; his ability to engage his classes in thought-provoking and rigorous discourse was unmatched.  I find his death saddening and hope time will somehow mend the pieces his absence leaves in its wake.   : (

This is a huge loss for the UMass Dartmouth community. Dr. Plaw was a great scholar.  We are all deeply saddened by this very sad and unexpected news.  He will be terribly missed.

He was so loveable. It was many years later that I re-met Avery as an adult. I was in awe of this little 'Family Circle' wandering boy who had grown up into a successful, brilliant man. It was always a pleasure to see Avery interacting with students and faculty between classes. I will miss his smile and his contagious joy. May he rest in peace and may those who knew him take comfort in happy memories...

Professor Avery Plaw was an excellent man who, in his far too short time on earth, accomplished so much and inspired so many. I am truly honored to have gotten the opportunity to learn from him and work with him.  My thoughts and prayers go to all the friends and family he leaves behind. He will be sorely missed.
