Born in Providence, he was the son of the late Agostino A. Bucci, Sr. and Anna (Rotondo) Bucci.
Gus was the loving father of Laura C. Bucci and her fiancé Rafael Khachaturian. He was also the brother of Sylvia Wolford and the late Arthur Bucci.
Gus graduated from Lymansville Elementary School, North Providence High School, and Rhode Island College. He worked for the State of Rhode Island Department of Children, Youth, and Families (DCYF) for 34 years, first in recreation and later in child protective services.
He was a volunteer for AARP RI, served on its State Legislative Committee, and received the Volunteer Leader of the Year Award for Advocacy for his efforts to better the lives of seniors and the community. Gus’s volunteer service extended to the Town of North Providence, as an elected member of the North Providence Democratic Town Committee.
Throughout his life, Gus was an outstanding basketball and softball player. He was a member of the NPH 1968 Class B State Championship basketball team. He was an infield softball player, spending time in leagues around Rhode Island, often at either third or second base. He also volunteered to coach his daughter’s athletic teams for many years, coaching in the North Providence Youth Basketball League and the North Providence Girls Softball League. In his senior years, Gus’s passion for sports remained, where he played on softball teams in Warwick and Woonsocket, as well as weekly basketball in Cumberland.
Gus will be remembered by all who knew him as a kind and generous husband, father, and friend. His quick wit and warm sense of humor gave him a talent for making everyone around him laugh. He often prepared excellent food and coffee for family and friends to enjoy.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Friday at 10 AM in Our Lady of Grace Church, 15 George Waterman Road, Johnston. Burial will be private.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the AARP Foundation (https://foundation.aarp.org/).
