Born on June 21, 1929 at Dunns, WV on Mountain Creek in Summers County, she was the daughter of the late Wade Virgil and Lou Conner Akers. She was one of 10 children. She graduated from Hinton High School in 1947 and received a teaching certificate from Concord College. She later earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in education from Morris Harvey College in Charleston, WV 1973. She began her teaching career in Ameagle, and retired from Raleigh County Schools after 29 years of teaching.
She was a former member of the Colcord Presbyterian Church, but later relocated in Daniels, WV where she became an active member of Trinity Presbyterian Church.
Her hobbies included gardening, painting with watercolors and acrylic, reading and playing string music and singing. She enjoyed spending time with her friends at the Commission on Aging and SAMs.
Ramona was a loving mother and grandmother, devoted to her family, her community through volunteer work, and her church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur L. Massey, three brothers, Samuel, James and Elmo Akers, and three sisters, Denette Dillon, Shirley Lilly and Ruth Okes.
Ramona will be lovingly remembered by her daughters, Regina Proffit and husband, Bob, of Sugar Land, TX, Rebecca Veneri and husband, Anthony, of Princeton, her son, Brett Massey and wife, Kathy of Brandy Station, VA , 7 grandchildren, Stacy and Troy Proffit, Anthony and Bryce Veneri, and Conner, Heather, and Seth Massey. She is also survived by her three sisters, Garnet Richmond, Clara Cox, and Colleen Ellison, and a host of nieces and nephews.
Friends may call from 6 to 8pm on Thursday, October 11, 2012 at the Rose & Quesenberry Funeral Chapel in Shady Spring.
Funeral Services will be held at 1:00PM on Friday, October 12, 2012 at the funeral home, with Pastor Greg Stone officiating. Interment will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.
Ramona’s grandchildren will honor her by serving as pallbearers.
