Walter William Mullen, Jr was born in Washington, D.C. to Walter William Mullen and Hazel Lucile Munroe on November 3, 1939. William grew up in Takoma Park and Wheaton, Maryland with his parents and brother, Paul Edgar Mullen. He spent much of his younger years with his Nana and mother while his father was overseas during the war. William graduated from Wheaton High School in 1957 where he was a member of the school orchestra for 3 years and the National Honor Society. He attended Georgia Tech and graduated in 1961 serving in the college band, was a member of Eta Kappa Nu and Kappa Kappa Psi and the Canterbury Club. He attended the University of Nebraska to obtain a Master of Science Degree in Biomedical Engineering and met the love of his life, Linda Lucile Garrels. They married on Feb 16, 1964 in Williamsburg, Virginia. They moved to Panama City shortly after and welcomed Elaine Catherine in 1965 and Frederick Owen in 1970. William worked at the Naval Coastal Systems Center as an electrical engineer and created/patented several key pieces of underwater communications equipment for divers and retired in 1996. He was active in the Jaycees during his working years. William and Linda moved to Fairbanks, Alaska in 1999 where they lived for 22 years. William and Linda moved to Wetumpka, Alabama in 2022 to be near family where he ultimately joined Jesus after a long illness.
William loved the Lord, his wife, his family and music. Throughout his life he was very involved in church serving in the choir by singing and playing trumpet, the vestry, search committees and the youth ministries. He loved to travel, go camping, spend time with family, tinker and repair things around the house, and create model train displays. He shared his love of learning and music with his family. He was patient, kind, never raised his voice, and always was there to help and support. His love for the Lord was reflected in everything he did throughout his life.
A visitation for Walter will be held Friday, November 3, 2023 from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM at Century Church, 1001 Marler Road, Pike Road, AL 36064, followed by a funeral service from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM. A reception will follow the service to celebrate William's birthday.
