Richard proudly served in the Marine Corps from 1962-1966 and enjoyed sharing stories from his time in the Corps with his family. After serving his country, Richard returned home to build Cinderella her castle at Disney World. He worked in several different industries after but found his most fulfilling position as a metallurgical engineer with Southern Company. After retirement, Richard enjoyed watching historical documentaries, playing with his beloved dog and constant companion Sophie, and spending time with his grandchildren.
Richard is preceded in death by his father, Earl W. Phillips, his stepfather, Thomas C. Goodwin, his brother, Michael E. Phillips and his sister, Tommy Lynn Goodwin. He is survived by his mother, Ruby Goodwin, brother Philip (Debra) Goodwin, sisters Ruth (Jim) Moore and Deborah (Jerry) Warren, and Judith-Anne Perry, his children Eric (Denease) McCullough, Heather (James) Burrus and Ian (Julia) Phillips, his nieces Deidra Tidwell, Kellie Warren and Ashley Scott as well as his six grandchildren Owen, Sarah, and Adaline Phillips, Mason McCullough and Phoebe and Matthew Burrus.
Services for Richard will be held on Thursday, October 6, 2022. The family will receive visitors starting at 11:00 AM. Service will begin at 12:00 Noon with burial to follow at the Alabama National Cemetery in Montevallo at 2:00 PM.
