Marian Katherine Nixon

Marian Katherine Nixon, age 90, of Deatsville, Alabama passed away on Thursday, December 28, 2023. She was preceded in death by her husband, Maurice Nixon; parents, John William and Minnie Mae Little. She is survived by her brother, Morris Little of Crestview, Fl and many extended family members.

Marian was born in Selma, AL, and was raised in Autaugaville, AL. She graduated from Hicks Memorial School in Autaugaville, AL, in 1952. She was a class favorite and was voted Loudest. Surprise, right? She also served as treasurer of the Beta Club. At some point in time she told me about playing on a girls softball team and showed me some pictures of her team.

On September 12, 1952, she married Maurice Nixon of Prattville, AL. They made their home in Deatsville, AL. On September 6, 1956, Marian completed a course of study with Williams School of Beauty in Prattville, AL, where she became a licensed cosmetologist and soon began her career at Belk Hudson in Montgomery, AL. She worked there until Maurice had a shop built for her in Deatsville....Marian's Beauty Shop. It was right beside the old grocery store that he and his Dad ran for a number of years. Her customers from Belk in Montgomery, would actually drive from Montgomery to Deatsville to get their hair washed and styled. I don't know if it's because she was really that good, or they just valued her friendship that much. She was good at her craft; but, I believe it was the latter. Marian was a great conversationalist and she was a good listener as well. I'm sure a lot of confidential information was shared in that little shop, sealed within its walls until eventually it was torn down.

Marian had a lot of different interests and was very talented in many areas. She was a seamstress, gardener (vegetables and flowers). She loved cooking and hosting meals for family gatherings. She labored tirelessly in the summertime picking vegetables from the garden then preparing them for canning or freezing and never failed to share with others if they were in need during the off season months or anytime really. She was very generous with whatever she had. Although Marian and Maurice never had any biological children; they had many nieces and nephews, whom they dearly loved. I don't think there were any of them they wouldn't have done anything for if asked. Those of us who lived nearby really received the bulk of their love and attention and we were happy to receive it. One nephew stated recently that no matter where he was stationed she would always write to him.

Marian worked diligently with Stoney Point Church of Christ and Grandview Pines Church of Christ where she served as a Bible Class teacher for many years and any other area where she could find to serve. Attending services and working with the Church was one of the things in her life that seemed to bring her the most joy. Rarely did she miss a service, a singing or a gospel meeting until later in life when they could no longer drive. But, her faithful friends here at Stoney Point made sure they made it to services on Sunday morning......coming by to pick them up. You"ll never know how much she treasured that and always remarked about how good everyone was to them. Miranda and the family want to express much gratitude to all of the congregation at Stoney Point for all the help Marian and Maurice received through the years especially after they were no longer able to drive. Your dedicated service was a tremendous help to the family and your continued devotion with cards and visits after their move to Prattville Health and Rehabilitation.

Also we'd like to thank Juanita Parker for being their caregiver the last years they were in their home. She was an errand runner, medication distributor, housekeeper, cook, reporter, counselor and sometimes referee. She wore all the hats and she did so graciously and purposefully. Her service was invaluable to our family. She continued to visit them after their move to Prattville Health and Rehabilitation and they always loved to see her.

A visitation for Marian will be held Tuesday, January 2, 2024 from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Stoney Point Church of Christ, 418 County Road 40, Deatsville, AL 36022. Following the visitation will be a funeral service at 2:00 PM at Stoney Point Church of Christ, 418 County Road 40, Deatsville, AL 36022.
