ROY, Miss Edith Irene, 92, a resident of Autauga County, was born at the home of her parents near the Pine Level and Stoney Point communities on July 3, 1923 and passed away on Saturday, October 17, 2015. Funeral services were held Wednesday, October 21, 2015, 11 a.m. at County Line Church of Christ with Minister Reed Brown and Bro. Robert Kohn of her home congregation officiating. Burial followed in the Stoney Point Church of Christ Cemetery on Autauga County Road 40, Deatsville, Alabama, beside her beloved sister, brother, and sister-in-law.
Survivors include niece and devoted caregiver, Carol Roy Lemon of Prattville, Dr. P. Duncan Roy, Jr., of Childersburg; five great nieces, three great nephews, three great-great nieces and five great-great nephews. Among those Miss Roy leaves behind are cherished caregivers Rose Davis and Charon Reeves. Miss Roy was preceded in death by parents, Peter Duncan and Oswald Tymna Timmerman Roy, one sister, Katie Ruth Roy, four brothers, Percy Duncan Roy, Sr., William Gaddys Roy, Ellie Ray Roy and Cowin Gerel Roy, the latter two of whom died in their early childhood years, and one niece, Belinda Faye Roy Burridge, who passed away earlier this year.
Miss Roy, after graduating from Marbury High School, went on to college at David Lipscomb College, now David Lipscomb University, in Nashville, Tennessee. Graduating from Peabody College, now merged with Vanderbilt University. She began her 41 year teaching career in Madison, Alabama during the years of World War II. After one year of teaching in Madison, Alabama, Miss Roy returned to her home county of Autauga, teaching at the former Pine Level Elementary School and serving as its principal from 1963-1970. Miss Roy attended classes at Montevallo and Jacksonville obtaining her Master’s of Education in 1957 at the age of 34 from Troy State University in Troy, Alabama. Miss Roy concluded her teaching career at Marbury High/Elementary School.
Many of the beloved students influenced by Miss Roy’s four decades of teaching returned for her ninetieth birthday celebration in July of 2013. The festivities included a traditional May Pole Dance, which was enjoyed so much in their time at former Pine Level Elementary School. The joy of seeing those memories on Miss Roy’s face was irreplaceable. Her presence will be missed by all those who knew and loved her and were impacted by her hard work, dedication and tenacity.
