Mrs. Hawes was born on December 7, 1919 in Pyrites, the daughter of Jeremiah and Lottie Wells Mahoney.
She graduated from Ogdensburg Free Academy and the Wallace School for Young Ladies.
She married Richard A. Hawes on December 4, 1948 at St. Mary’s Cathedral Rectory in Ogdensburg. Msgr. Gordon F. Caseo officiated. Her husband predeceased her on June 21, 1966. She was also predeceased by her brothers, Dr. John W. Mahoney and James J. Mahoney and her sisters, Frances M. Sheehan, Katherine F. Mahoney, Marguerite L. Pratt and a stepson, Phillip Hawes.
Mrs. Hawes is survived by her son, Richard A. Hawes and his wife Terri of Seattle, Washington along with one step-grandson, Andrew Chase also of Seattle. Also, 2 stepdaughters, Barbara (Harry) Terpos and Geraldine (August) Pocius of Florida. She is survived by several nieces and nephews including Mary (Richard) Snell, James (Michele) Sheehan and Katherine (Richard) Casey of Potsdam.
Mary worked for the family business Hawes Lumber Company in Massena, NY for years and then she worked several years for McCann’s Implements, Inc. in Malone, NY.
Mary was a longtime resident of Malone, NY. She was communicant of St. Joseph’s Church in Malone since 1959. She had held offices in the St. Joseph’s Altar and Rosary Society, Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Ladies of the Elks #1303 and Malone Golden Ages Club.
A Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, July 2nd at 10 am at St. Mary’s Church in Potsdam with Rev. Stephen Rocker celebrant. Interment will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Ogdensburg, NY. Arrangements are with the Garner Funeral Service in Potsdam, NY. Condolences can be shared @www.garnerfh.com.
