Mrs. Irene M. Murphy of Potsdam, New York, passed away on December 1, 2013. Mrs. Murphy was born in Potsdam on January 21, 1926, daughter of George and Margaret Perkins. She graduated from Potsdam High School in 1944 and subsequently with honors from Potsdam State Teachers College in 1948. In college, she was tapped for Kappa Delta Phi, the international education honor society.
In 1949, she married Richard H. Murphy who predeceased her. Richard owned and operated Murphy’s Service Station in Potsdam for many years.
Mrs. Murphy is survived by son, David R. Murphy of Saratoga Springs, New York; daughter, Terri M. Burditt and son-in-law, John C. Burditt of New Haven, Connecticut; and son, Kevin J. Murphy and daughter-in-law, Amy L. Murphy of Potsdam; as well as seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren. One sister, Lois Perkins, resides in Canton, New York. Nine other siblings predeceased Mrs. Murphy.
A private burial will take place at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Potsdam in the spring. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to the Dick Murphy/Dalton Guyette Memorial Youth Project (c/o Murphy, 103 Elm Street, Potsdam, NY 13676). This fund founded by Mrs. Murphy’s daughter-in-law, Amy, has served the needs of local North Country Schoolchildren for the past ten years providing scholarships for athletic, musical, and educational opportunities.
