Mrs. Eleanor Margaret Farnsworth, age 97 of Potsdam, NY passed away on Thursday, September 26, 2013 at the United Helpers Maplewood Campus in Canton, NY. A mass of Christian burial will be held on Monday, September 30, 2013 at 10 am at St. Mary’s Church with Msgr Robert Aucoin celebrant. Eleanor is survived by a sister Alice Gagnon; niece Judy Moriarty; special friend Mary Wellings (who Eleanor always considered her adopted daughter); daughter in law Mary Farnsworth Aiken and several other nieces and nephews.
She is predeceased by her husband Leo Farnsworth; her son David Farnsworth; brothers John and Joseph Phillips; sisters Ann Gagnon, Julia Yolton, Mary Young and Hilda Jarvis.
Eleanor M. Farnsworth was born on May 29, 1916 in Norfolk, NY to the late John Phillips and Julia Bonn. She was a 1934 graduate of Norwood High School. On September 21, 1939 she was married to Leo Farnsworth at St. Andrew’s Church in Norwood, NY. She worked at the Ogdensburg State Hospital from 1936-1940. She then went to work at Canton Potsdam Hospital where she worked as a nurse until her retirement in 1979.
Eleanor was a member of St. Mary’s Church, member of St. Mary’s prayer line, Birthright Society, Altar and Rosary Society, St. Andrew’s Catholic Daughters and Boy Scout’s of America.
Eleanor was known for her care and compassion and quick wit and sense of humor. Her Catholic faith was an extremely important part of her life and a constant source of strength.
