Mr. Charles W. Hayes, age 84 of Potsdam, NY passed away on Friday, March 29, 2019 at the Massena Memorial Hospital. Friends may call at the Garner Funeral Home on Tuesday, April 2nd from 2-7pm. A funeral mass will be held on Wednesday, April 3rd at St. Mary’s Church in Potsdam, NY at 11am with Rev. Stephen Rocker celebrant. Burial with military honors will take place in the spring at St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Colton, NY. Contributions in his memory can be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of the St. Lawrence Valley or to the Potsdam Volunteer Rescue Squad.
Charles is survived by his loving wife of 59 years Ellen Katherine Hayes; sons Daniel (Gayle) Hayes of Potsdam, Edward (Carrie) Hayes of South Colton, Patrick (Cynthia) Hayes of Baldwinsville and William (Beth) Hayes of Potsdam; a daughter Debora (Ernie) Charleston; grandchildren Kristy, Edward, Amanda, Katie, Michael, Aaron, James, Carson, Jarrett, Reaghan, Greg and Whitney; 13 great grandchildren; siblings Jerry (Diane) Hayes, Joe (Jane) Hayes, Ted Hayes, Cynthia (Dean) Lamphere, Kathy (Randy) LaBar, Susan Hayes and Joanne McGill and several nieces and nephews.
He is predeceased by a son Michael John Hayes in 1964; sisters and spouses Margaret (Erwin) Stone, Mary Jane (Lee) Lindner and a brother and spouse Timothy (Diane) Hayes and a brother in law Lyle McGill.
Mr. Charles W. Hayes was born on July 6, 1934 in Potsdam, NY to the late Henry Hayes and Ella Ellis. He was a 1952 graduate of Potsdam Central High School. He worked at the Ovalwood Dish until enlisting in the United States Army from 1954, with close cousins Sam LaShomb and Dan Hayes. He served until 1956, then served in the reserves until 1961. He then went to work for Niagara Mohawk as a meter reader, later as a traveling operator for the company.
Charlie really enjoyed spending time with his family both at his home and at their family camp. He was a Roaring Brook honorary member.
