Born on May 10, 1934, in Ogdensburg, NY, she was the daughter of Charles J. Cryderman and Marjorie L (Bradley) Cryderman. Betty grew up on a farm in Madrid alongside her older brother, Victor, and two younger sisters, Karen and Nancy. She graduated from Madrid Central School in 1954, having received her early education in a nearby one-room schoolhouse. After graduation, Betty began working as a baker in the Madrid Central School cafeteria, It is there that she met her future husband, James M. Parlow, who delivered milk to the cafeteria from the dairy distribution business he operated. Shortly thereafter, she was recruited right out of Madrid Central School kitchen to work as a telephone operator due to the demand created by the seaway project, which brought many workers and families to the area. She continued as an operator until marrying James M. Parlow on May 5th, 1962, and starting a family. Betty and Jim welcomed four children, including a set of twin girls.
Betty cherished her family and provided them with countless memorable experiences, such as month-long summer vacations in their motor home traveling the U.S., creating an outdoor oven for baking muffins, maintaining a garden, and canning food for the family. Betty was a gifted seamstress and made most of the clothes her children wore while also doing sewing and alterations for countless other people over the years. Once her children were grown, Betty sold World Book Encyclopedia and Child Craft books to families in the community. She also worked at the local JCPenney and briefly returned to the telephone company during the closure of the office. Additionally, she was employed at Potsdam Laundry and Dry Cleaning and the Watertown Daily Times. Betty was a talented watercolor artist and enjoyed making other crafts as well.
