William Wayne Thompson was born on April 27, 1935 in Vernal, Utah, the 4th of 7th children born to William and Helen (Mulqueen) Thompson, and passed away on February 5, 2022 in Gresham, Oregon at the age of 86.
He was known to most as Bill or Billy, and “Grandpa Dude” to his great-grandkids and their mom Caitlyn. He was a man of varied interests. He liked to play guitar – Amazing Grace was probably his favorite, and it was comforting to hear him play it. He was very interested in genealogy, and had records going back hundreds of years. Poetry was a passion, as well. He had even published a poem, and his interest probably came from his love of reading and as a unique way of expression. He liked to tinker, and had a workbench that was well-utilized. Bill’s last home was adorned with various flowers and hummingbird and squirrel feeders. He had a particular fondness for Chihuahuas, and they became cherished companions. Volunteering was especially fulfilling for him, and Doernbecher Children’s Hospital was the primary beneficiary of his time and he received numerous recognitions for his work. He was an active member and elder at his local church.
Bill’s primary profession was roofing, and his expertise was sought-after and valued. If he did a job it was of the best quality.
Mr. Thompson was preceded in death by his youngest son Paul Wayne, and by brothers Earl, Allan, Lawrence, and Vern. He is survived by his sisters Janet and Barbara, and will also be missed by his children Tori, Randel, and Laurie, numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Finally, from the lips of a 3-year-old who was wise beyond his years:
“Mom (and everyone), don’t be sad about Grandpa-Dude…he’s ok, we just don’t have to go to his house any more. We just talk to the sky and he can hear us.” – Young Master Kash
