Bill was born in Portland on March 2, 1952, and except for his military service was a lifelong resident of the city. His parents were Kirby and Harriet (Venn) Haskell, and he was a graduate of Grant High School, where he managed the football team. After high school, Bill enlisted in the Navy, where he proudly served on the USS Enterprise as a radarman during Vietnam. Upon his honorable discharge, he worked several different types of jobs before beginning his career at the Post Office in janitorial services, eventually moving to mail handler and retiring after over 25 years of service. On July 3, 1999 after a brief courtship, he married Judith Cory in Reno, NV.
Bill later became a volunteer and on-call chaplain at Meridian Park Hospital, a position he loved and took great pride in for over 18 years. He loved volunteering, was an avid reader, and enjoyed traveling – he and Judy took a 16 month road trip after both had retired, and among other special places they spent a great deal of time exploring the Air and Space Museum at the Smithsonian, the Houston Space Center and Gettysburg National Military Park. Bill had been an Eagle Scout, and gave back to the Scouts as a mentor throughout his life. Among his other interests were beach trips, local off-the-beaten-path drives, miniature golf, fishing, and the rhododendron garden.
Personal relationships meant a great deal to Bill. As much as he enjoyed helping and supporting his friends and associates, he was always crestfallen when he thought he had disappointed people. His love for God was evident in his daily life; he would read his bible every morning before anything else. He proudly served as an ordained deacon in his church. His wife referred to him as "Her gift from God."
Mr. Haskell will be missed and his memory cherished by his wife of sixteen years, Judy Haskell of Wilsonville. He is further survived by brother Robert Haskell and his wife Cheryl of Oregon City, and by two nieces and two nephews.
Private family services will be held. Mr. Haskell will be interred with honors at Willamette National Cemetery at a future date.
