Violet attended high school on Whidbey Island before moving to the Seattle area at 18 to study at the University of Washington. After college, she worked for the Hershey Company for about eight years. On July 27, 1963 she married Chester Runyan and devoted herself to their family. When her boys were younger, Violet and Chester would travel to their gymnastics meets. They were also regular bunco and pinochle players, and their home was a destination for family and friends to gather. They were avid league bowlers with the Fire Department Bowling League, and were very involved with their church (Kern Park Christian), and with Loaves and Fishes. Violet enjoyed knitting, crochet and needlework, and making Christmas ornaments. She also maintained a vegetable garden wherever they lived.
Mrs. Runyan was preceded in death by Chester in 2000, and by two brothers and two sisters. She will be remembered by her sons, Scott Runyan and wife Melisa of Gladstone and Brian Runyan and wife Laurie of Ridgefield, Washington, and by four grandchildren, Caleb, Alicia, Bronwyn, and Erin, and numerous great-grandchildren.
