David was born in September 1975 in Belle Fourche, South Dakota. He was raised on a cattle ranch in Broadus, Montana and it was there that he developed a keen appreciation for hard work and the craftsman skills that would infuse so many areas of his life and career.
David moved to Portland, Oregon, in 1997. After completing culinary school, he worked his way up to sous chef at Portland’s renowned Wildwood restaurant. In 2006, he moved to Vancouver and took on roles as executive chef and executive chef/owner in several restaurants that were foundational in establishing Vancouver’s food scene, including Roots, 360 Pizzeria and Lapellah. Following his departure from the restaurant industry in January 2020, he went on to co-found a spirits distribution company in Portland.
In 2013, he met the love of his life, Tiffany Weston. In 2015, they married and their home in west Vancouver quickly became the gathering place to celebrate birthdays and holidays, and the place where friends became family. Whether David was preparing his son Weston’s favorite banana pancake breakfast, cooking a formal Christmas feast or throwing together a casual midweek dinner, he always created the perfect meal to honor even the simplest of occasions.
And if you were lucky enough to enjoy one of these meals, you were also lucky enough to see firsthand the amazing, lush plants that fill their home. David’s horticulture skills were without parallel and even the ficklest of plants thrived under his care.
Whether he was traveling through Europe or Asia with his wife and family or motorcycling through Mexico with one of his closest friends, David was most inspired when he was taking in new cultures and trying new foods with the people he loved. He loved camping and the outdoors. He was a kiteboarder, a cyclist and an avid skier who took great pride in getting his daughter Finleigh and son Weston on skis as soon as they were able to walk.
Music was core to who David was and he treasured his younger days when he followed Phish with his best bud Tyler. John Mayer, Chris Stapleton, Wood Brothers, Wilco, Tedeschi Trucks and John Prine provided the soundtracks for many road trips and family dinners.
David was truly a gift to those who knew and loved him. He was a loyal husband, father and friend with the unique ability to make people feel seen. He delighted everyone with his quick and witty retorts. He was generous with his love, generous with his knowledge and at times, generous with his opinions. He expected the best from those around him. And in return, you always got the best from him.
He left this world with many hands and hearts by his side, including his wife Tiffany and his dear friend Dustin, while a community of friends sat vigil both in house and in spirit.
His time with us was far too short and we will all miss him dearly.
David was preceded in death by his mother Kay Mork of Billings, Montana; father Roy Mork of Cody, Wyoming; brother Dean Mork of Billings, Montana; and his beloved pit bull, El Capitan of Vancouver, Washington.
