A lifelong Portlander, Tom graduated from Jefferson High School. He met his beloved wife of 62 years, Margaret, while cruising 82nd Avenue as teenager. Together they raised 3 children. He was drafted into the US Army in 1961 and served until 1963. Progressing from “lot boy” in his teens to General Sales Manager at Monte Shelton Motors at retirement, Tom built a career reflecting his passion for cars and his love for closing a deal.
A generous father and grandfather and jack-of-all-trades, Tom enjoyed supporting his children in their hobbies. Whether it be the restoration of a classic truck, the creation of a custom-made guitar, or the need to learn a left-handed layup, Tom offered sage advice and support.
He filled his free time playing golf with friends and family and rejoiced when he captured the elusive hole-in-one. He cherished his Gibson guitar and loved to sing classic country songs. When home-improvement projects weren’t keeping him busy, he often relaxed with Margaret on the Oregon coast (where he insisted on oceanfront accommodations) or by the cascading waterfall he built in the family backyard.
Tom is survived by his wife Margaret; children, Michael, Christine (Dave Kolar), and Mark; brother, John; sister, Catherine Rogers; grandchildren, Casey, Nicole, Andrew, and Alex; and a large extended family. Tom was preceded in death by his parents, Alfred and Eileen McBride, and his sister, Patricia McMicheal.
