Peggy grew up with her parents Newton and Amalie Langerman in Portland Heights. She was part of the Meier & Frank Department Store family and Hirsch Weiss White Stag Sportswear. She attended Ainsworth Grade School followed by Catlin High School (now Catlin-Gabel). She attended Mills College graduating with a BA in Fine Arts.
Peggy then ventured on to Cleveland where she earned a Fellowship to the Cleveland Playhouse Company and became an actor. There, she met and married Wayne Jordan (1956-1972). After traveling through Europe for their 6 month honeymoon, they settled in Manhattan, New York. While Wayne worked as an actor, Peggy also acted with a few theater companies in NYC.
After moving to San Francisco, CA for some warmth and sunshine (and a less expensive city to live in). They had their two children Nick and Hilary. Peggy also performed at The Actors Workshop, and interviewed many influential celebrities on a weekly radio show called "The Green Room" in San Francisco.
Moving to Portland in 1965 was an easy decision given prospects of a new job for Wayne and a down payment of a much needed house by Peggy's parents.
In Portland, Peggy always kept busy with Portland Repertory Theater, The Mark Allen Players Dinner
Theater in Canada, Portland, and Washington; She worked for over 25 years in TV and radio.
Peggy then branched out and pioneered programs in the mental health field. She spearheaded Metropolitan Family Services: Plays for Living; PR for Welfare Conference, called “Wages, Welfare or What?”
She participated as an Actor in a Consortium of Judges, Lawyers & Mental Health Professionals for training in the Involuntary Commitment Procedure of the Allegedly Mentally Ill – (Federal Grants); And eventually became a Weight Watchers of Oregon – Group Leader.
Peggy also found time to volunteer with the Boards of Young Audiences in San Francisco & Portland
Portland Art Museum – Activities Council, PTA President Ainsworth School, Citizens for Schools, Adult Literacy Programs, Civic Theatre Readers Theatre, Teaching Improvisation (acting), National Alliance for Mental Illness (NAMI), NAMI NW WALK – 2007 Master of Ceremonies, Christie Care – Captain of bridge team for fundraising competition, Advisory and Steering Committees for Capital Campaign for Creekside Center (CCMH), The Town Club Board of Governors, The Town Club Entertainment Chairman, The Town Club 1st Vice President, and an impressively skilled fund raiser for those living with mental health issues.
Peggy was married to Carl E. Hammond in 1977 for 44 years. He died in October of 2021. She leaves 3 wonderful children; Hilary married to Lee; John married to Robin; Kirsten married to Mark, and 4 delightful grandchildren; Jordan, Jane, Alison, and Ian. Peggy's son Nick died in 2011.
Finally, Peggy was stylish, sophisticated, generous, irreverent, and loved giving to family and friends. She had a life full of surprises and adventures.
