April 10, 1919 – March 31, 2014
Pearl Adeline Thompson was born in Hanks, ND and where she lived until 1933. After their move to Portland, OR, she graduated from Commerce High (now Cleveland HS). She married David R. Ashpole on May 31, 1939 in Vancouver, WA. They were married 59 years.
Pearl worked as a waitress and after retirement, volunteered for the Red Cross. She spent the last 30 years enjoying her family, friends, and her church, Tabor Heights United Methodist in SE Portland. She commonly expressed her faith by saying, “I never worry about anything,.”
Dave & Pearl bought a camp site at Lake Merwin Campers Hideaway in the early 1970’s, where they were active on various boards and where they enjoyed spending most of their summers in retirement. She had 10 Grandchildren, 26 Great-Grandchildren and 5 Great-Great-Grandchildren. Their pictures were displayed proudly and she would share details about each of them.
She never knew a stranger because once you were introduced to her, you were her friend. She loved playing pinochle, bingo, Bunco, cribbage, and mah jongg. She willingly learned new games and then taught other people to play. She was a gracious hostess to those she invited to dine with her and enjoyed going out with friends and family. She took part in almost every activity offered at CherryWood Retirement Community.
Pearl is survived by her sons Daryl (Susan) Ashpole of Puyallup WA, Doug (Dawn) Ashpole of Portland OR and daughter Sharon (Bill) Hanson of Mission Viejo CA. . She was preceded in death by her husband, David R Ashpole in 1998 and grandson Ryan D Ashpole in 2013.
The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff of CherryWood Retirement Community – Royal Anne. They have been fantastic and we would not have made it through this period without their support and care.
