It is with sadness, but also with celebration, that the Hooker family announces the passing of our wonderful patriarch, Samuel Edward Hooker, peacefully on the afternoon of Saturday, August 27th, 2016.
Sam was a powerful and widely respected minister, a beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He is predeceased by his partner in life and in the ministry, Adele Hooker, after a deeply engaged and loving marriage of 72 years. "Life should be lived as a prayer," was Sam's watchword and, as all who had the privilege of knowing him will agree, he lived up to those words. He truly blessed everyone who crossed his path with his grace, his wit, and his wisdom. He will be missed and held as a revered memory by those friends and family who remain.
The family includes daughter, Marydith Grant and her husband, Jon Haverly; his son, Randy Hooker and his wife, Cheryl Whitener; his son, Grant Hooker and his wife, Pamela Hooker. Grandchildren include Randy's daughter, Allison, Marydith’s son, Brett, and Grant's daughter, Lisa and his son Nick, who, with his wife Nicola and Sam's daughter, Marydith, provided loving care to their beloved Poppy in the last years of his life. Great-grandchildren include Nick's daughter, Amelia, Lisa's son, Riley, and Brett's twin sons, Kaelan and Torin.
Family and friends are invited to attend a social gathering at 11AM on Saturday, September 10th, 2016 at Mount Scott Church of God located at 10603 SE Henderson, Portland Oregon, 97266. A light lunch will be served. This will be followed by a noon memorial service in the church sanctuary, followed by a 3PM internment service at the Lincoln Memorial Cemetery, which will be open to all.
Sam was a light to many in dark times. He was a man of both humility and effectiveness. When asked about his faith, his choice reply was what he had heard a Pastor friend say when he was asked by a stranger if he was a Christian: "I try to walk in the Jesus way." Our lovely Sam Hooker was pretty good at doing just that. He’ll remain in our hearts and our minds for all time.
