Norman Valentine Wirth, M.D., age 83, passed away on May 27, 2016 in Las Vegas, Nevada surrounded by family and loved ones. He was the beloved son of Valentine and Katie Wirth, both of whom were raised in Germany, and met on the boat over to America. They fell in love, married, and had their only child, Norman. His love of family, country, community, and medicine was from the faithful Lutheran upbringing that his parents guided him through. He graduated from the University of Portland, attended and graduated from Creighton Medical School in Omaha, Nebraska, and became a beloved Ophthalmologist of the Portland community. Prior to opening his own private medical practice, he served his country as a Naval Medical Doctor, on a submarine, assigned to the Marines; It was pre-Vietnam and "his boys" would do reconnaissance missions. He eluded to them getting information before Vietnam and took care of those who were hurt, severely injured, or perished. He loved his patients, his staff, and his hospital - Providence Portland Medical Center, where he practiced for 31 years and was on the board of directors for the Providence Medical Foundation for 28 of those years pioneering, with his colleagues, many great institutions to help families of the Aginging, Cancer, and childhood diseases. He enjoyed the water whether it be the beach or cruising the San Juan Islands in Washington state on his power boat. He loved to golf and was a member of Waverly Country Club. He often referred to golf as, "A walk in the park with friends". Crosswords, playing cards, walking the beach, continuing his philanthropic efforts with the Foundation Board at Providence, and visiting and caring for family and friends after retirement were the heartfelt joys of his life. He is survived by his Daughter, Julie Wirth-Corbett, Grandson, Zachary Wirth-Post, & Son-In-Law, Michael Corbett; and Ex-Wife, Marvel Wirth, including many wonderful family, friends, patients and colleagues that have touched and made his life richer.
