Norm spent most of his childhood on the family farm, which his family homesteaded, in Merlin, Oregon. At age 12 his family moved to Hillsboro where he lived to this day. Norm graduated from Hilhi in 1951.
In 1953 he married his high school sweetheart, Dolores Reed. They had two children, but later divorced. In 1973 he married Dorothy (Angevine) Floerke and later adopted her two children.
A gifted basketball player, Norm attended Pacific University on a basketball scholarship. He was unanimously selected to the Northwest Conference all star team each year that he played. In 1971 he was inducted to the NAIA Hall of Fame and in 1992 into Pacific University's Hall of Fame. He earned the nickname "Hawk" on the court. Norm holds two scoring records at Pacific to this day - most points scored in a single season (averaging 26 points per game) and most points in a career (over 1,700). The latter is most impressive as he scored these in 3 seasons, most competitors have had 4 seasons to reach his mark, yet his record still stands.
Norm spent most of his working life as a teacher, coach, counselor, and school administrator for Hillsboro High School. There he was an esteemed colleague and mentor. He retired from the school district in 1991.
An avid outdoors man, Norm enjoyed hunting and fishing with his buddies, He enjoyed the companionship of many lifelong friends. He loved boating, camping, and the great outdoors. He liked veering off the beaten path and exploring places unknown. Old ghost towns and mining sites in Oregon were special to him. Norm loved watching football and basketball games on TV, and loved a good Western movie. But most of all, he loved his family. And he loved us well. He was always a staunch supporter of each of us and his guidance was instrumental. He had a wonderful sense of humor and we will cherish memories of his smile and laughter.
On June 13, 2011, with all of his family by his side, Norm quietly left this earth. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; children, Shari (and Greg) Boitano, Jodi Anne (and Jeff) Johnson, Jodi Sue (and Lance) Sperling, and Mark Hubert; sisters, Margaret Clemmens of Newberg, Oregon and LaRose O'Hara of Cocoa Beach, Florida; 4 grandchildren (Holli, Aaron, Christina, and Caroline) and great grandson, Michael.
