Our beloved mom Norma M. Walters passed away peacefully on June 15, 2022 at the age of 94. Born and raised in Toronto, Canada she worked in various secretarial positions throughout her early career. In July, 1949, during a trip to Oregon to visit a close friend, she met a handsome American sailor, Jim Walters, and they married in December of that year. They were married for sixty-three years before Jim’s passing in 2013.
The couple spent their early married life in Adak Alaska, Midway Island in the Pacific, and San Diego, CA. After Jim’s retired from the US Navy the couple moved to Tigard, Oregon where Norma worked at various businesses through Kelley Services, eventually landing a position at Weed Control, Inc. and later retiring from Oregon School Activities Association. After retirement Norma enjoyed volunteer work at Phoenix Rising and for 15 years at the Tigard Public Library for which she received an Outstanding Volunteer Award from the City of Tigard.
Norma enjoyed sewing, knitting, Scrabble, music, dancing, doing the New York Times crossword, lunches at the Olive Garden, and a glass or two of good wine. Norma was an active member of PFLAG and worked tirelessly for equal rights for all. She was a beloved member of the Lake Oswego United Church of Christ which she considered her second family.
Norma was preceded in death by her loving husband Jim, her beloved sister Liz, and her constant companion, Lily the cat. She is survived by her daughters Kerry and Kim, her nephew Ward Clark, and her son Kevin (Jackie) along with her two grandchildren Jacob and Hannah.
An informal gathering to share a light meal along with stories of her life will be held on Thursday, June 30 at 6:30 p.m. at Lake Oswego United Church of Christ, 1111 Country Club Rd. in Lake Oswego, 97034. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to St. Jude, Portland PFLAG, or the Oregon Humane Society.
