She was born in Chicago, Illinois on March 11, 1934 to Harold and Dorothy Smith.
In 1944, Nancy moved to Happy Valley, Oregon with her parents and younger brother, Douglas, where she graduated from high school
After high school, Nancy went to work for the state of Oregon as an administration assistant until retirement.
Nancy met Arthur Dickey at a social function sponsored by the YMCA and YWCA; and three months later they were married in December 1953 until Arthur’s death in 1996.
Nancy’s greatest passion was traveling to foreign countries to see the places and settings described in the numerous books she read; history books from prehistory to colonial times, biographical, novels and science fiction. Before the international traveling, Nancy, Art and their children, Ronald and Brenda, traveled around the Pacific Northwest parks and wilderness areas with the Chemeketans, an outdoor activities club located in Salem, Oregon.
As an administrative assistant and a descendant of Norwegian immigrants, Nancy couldn’t help but get involved with genealogical research and eventually became a participating member of the Scandinavian Genealogical Society of Oregon.
Nancy’s surviving immediate family are, daughter Brenda Dickey and grandchildren, Mik, Sofia and Kate Pospisil.
Nancy will be laid to rest at 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, June 6, 2018, in Lincoln Memorial Park Cemetery, located at 11801 SE Mt. Scott Blvd., Portland, OR. 97086. It will be a short, graveside memorial service.
