Michael George Salmon was born in Waukegan, Illinois, on August 3, 1936 to parents George and Marian. He was one of four; brothers John and Bill and sister Marianne rounded out the family. At the end of WWII, his family moved to Chicago where his parents owned and operated a small convenience store. In 1950, the family moved to Portland, Oregon. There, Mike attended Franklin High School and Portland State College. In 1956, he met Nancy Joan Withers, and they were married on September 21st, 1957. Together, they had four children; son Steve followed by daughters Suzy, Sherry, and Sandy.
On July 16, 1964, Mike was sworn in as a police officer with the Portland Police Bureau, where he spent his first 6 years as a patrolman. In July of 1970, he was promoted to rank of Sergeant and served for 6 years at North Precinct. In 1976 he was assigned as the Commander of the Portland Police Sunshine Division, a position he held for 14 years until his retirement in 1990.
During his time with the Bureau, Mike was involved in several volunteer activities, forming the first Explorer Scout Law Enforcement post, and serving on Gov. Tom McCall's Youth Commission for two years. He was also a member of the Commercial Club of Portland, receiving their top annual award in 1980. He spent 17 years as a member of the Kiwanis Club, serving as President for two years and working with the Kiwanis Camp for disabled children on Mt. Hood.
In retirement, Mike certainly kept busy. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, and spending time with his family, including grandchildren, Hallie, Azure, Emma, Veronica, Alexander, Madison, Terra and his faithful canine companion, Zeus. He also continued serving his community as a volunteer, assisting with the Master Gardener program at OSU for several years, as well as spending over 20 years as a beloved volunteer fixture at OMSI.
Mike spent his life dedicated to helping those around him. He had a penchant for the outdoors, and was a true adventurer, sampling local cuisine (and beer!) everywhere he visited. He always had a joke at the ready, and declared himself family chef for all major holidays. His gregarious presence, generous spirit, and easy-going nature will never be forgotten.
